Original motivation of java technology is
to create platform independent programming language that can be used to develop
programs to operate consumer electronics devices.
Examples: refrigerators,
TV set boxes, micro ovens, washing machines ….. Etc.

But later the original motivation of java
technology changed to create platform independent programming language that can
be used to develop secured network applications.
